How does the FlexPower Program work?

On extremely hot days, energy demand can spike so much that getting power to everyone who needs it can become inefficient. On days when we anticipate there will be a high demand for energy, the FlexPower Program will schedule Flex Hours Events: this means we’ll shift some of your energy use out of the hours when demand is highest.

If you enrolled in FlexPower with a smart thermostat, we’ll do this by working with your thermostat to keep your home comfortable all day, while being a bit more flexible about when we cool it.

If you enrolled in FlexPower with an electric vehicle or an electric vehicle charger, we’ll do this by working with your vehicle or charger to temporarily shift your charging outside of the most high-demand hours.

If you enrolled in FlexPower with an electric water heater, we’ll do this by working with your water heater to have hot water available all day, while being a bit more flexible about when we heat water for your home.

By tweaking your AC thermostat, EV charging schedule, and/or water heater during the most high-demand hours, and coordinating your energy use with thousands of others’, we can keep energy demand under control while keeping you comfy and ready to roll.

The FlexPower Program Season runs yearly from June 1st through October 31st.

Remember, even during the program season, we’ll only adjust your devices during Flex Hours Events. These happen up to 20 times in the season, and run a maximum of 4 hours each. The rest of the time, your devices will run on your normal schedule unless it is adjusted by you. We’ll always let you know ahead of time when Flex Hours Events are scheduled.
