Flex Hours Events are generally scheduled only on occasional extreme-weather days, when we expect people to use a lot of energy at once. You could enroll in FlexPower or SmartFlex programs to participate in Flex Hour Events that can last up to four hours. Flex Hours Events differ based on whether you are enrolled in the FlexPower or SmartFlex program.
FlexPower Program
- Smart Thermostat
- If you have a smart thermostat (that controls central air conditioning or a central heat pump) installed in your home, the FlexPower Program will automatically reduce its energy usage slightly during event hours, allowing for hands-free participation. During those times, we may cool your home before energy demand spikes, then run your A/C or heat pump a little less in the hours when demand is highest.
- We always make sure your home stays within 4 degrees of your regularly programmed temperatures, so you stay comfortable before, during, and after Flex Hours Events. And remember, you're always in control of your thermostat and can opt out of events if needed.
- Electric Vehicle
- If you charge a compatible electric vehicle at your home, the FlexPower Program will automatically pause your EV charging during event hours, allowing for hands-free participation. Charging will automatically resume after the Flex Hours Event ends.
- Your EV will continue to follow the charging preferences you've already set like your schedule and minimum or maximum charge level, so your battery stays topped up and you're always ready to roll. And remember, you’re always in control of your EV and can opt out of events if needed.
SmartFlex Program
On the other hand, you can participate in the SmartFlex Program with or without a compatible smart thermostat, central air conditioning, or an electric vehicle by actively reducing energy usage on your own during the event hours by taking actions like waiting to run your dishwasher or do laundry, turning your thermostat up a few degrees, or delaying your EV charging.
